Why Online Marketing is the Way to Go

You don’t have to get your paycheck from a social media agency to be wondering why your communication strategy needs to consider an online marketing component. Simply put, if you own a company and you’re NOT doing some form of social media marketing, you’re not being all you can be. Social media marketing is incredibly big these days, but not everyone knows just what the best way to use it is. So, here is a collection of how different corporations have successfully used web marketing to nurture their online presence and increase sales.

First we have Blendtec which asked consumers “will it blend?” in a collection of enjoyable clips on the popular video sharing site, YouTube. These videos displayed a variety of expensive objects being thrown into blenders to try to see if they would end up either decimated in a blender or safe. Everybody loves watching rampant destruction, so it’s pretty clear why these videos fast became viral. But, most importantly, the viewers did not remain looky-looks, they actually went out and got the blenders themselves.

You may not know Sun Microsystems, but really should check them out. Sun Microsystems launched a very successful blog where they allowed both positive and negative comments to encourage an honest and open conversation. Unlike other businesses which frequently try to censor folk who dissent with what the company had done or is doing, Sun Microsystems realized that honesty is the best policy. This significantly improved both customer satisfaction and sales.

Starbucks is huge so I assume that you already know everything that they are about. What you might not know, however, is that Starbucks actually created their own social media site that fast became all the rage. They developed a site that let users give suggestions on how Starbucks could improve as well as letting other customers choose what ideas they most wanted to see come turn into practice. By doing this, Starbucks created a forum where their customers could have their voices be heard, showing and that even a large company like Starbucks cared enough by each individual customer to listen to what they had to say. Now, that’s great PR if I’ve ever heard it.

There are those who (erroneously, in my opinion) think that social media has not yet come into its own as a marketing tool. These three businesses clearly show that this is not the case. Companies are employing social media as part of their communications strategy, with amazing results. You simply cannot afford to let forward-thinking companies leave you in the dust. That’s how it is.
