Want to Give Great Back Massages?

August 17th, 2011

Everybody wants to get a massage but not everybody feels comfortable giving them to somebody. The possibility of causing pain to the other person is a very serious concern. In addition, it’s possible to feel apprehensive that the massage might not be good enough. We get afraid that the other person won’t appreciate what we are trying to do. Fortunately, it is definitely possible to learn how to give a good massage each time you wish to do so. Here’s information on how you too can give any person an awesome back massage.

It is important that the person be comfortable while he is lying down. Firm and soft are the aim in terms of the surface on which they lie down. While you don’t don’t have a massage table, you might try them on the bed. If you have them lying on the floor, place a couple of soft blankets, towels or a mat so that the person will feel better. If the massage-ee prefers to keep his or her shirt on, make sure that the shirt is made of a softer material to avoid accidental scratches and friction build up.

Start with the standard rub. Slowly, and using the entire flat side of both of your hands, rub up from the lower back area and toward the neck. This rub should have at least some pressure in it but don’t try to use your full massage pressure yet. Start at the base of the person’s back and then glide your hands up the back then across the shoulders and then back down the back. As you keep doing this, make your loops smaller and smaller so that you can be sure to cover the entire back.

Try to use the heels of your hands to make good and direct pressure. Work the heels of your palms in small circles beginning in the middle of the base of the back and then working out toward the sides and then upwards and back in until you’ve covered the whole back.

Sit on one side of the individual who is on the receiving end of your massage. Then, set one hand on top of the other and thrust into the back with only your fingers. Start at the backbone and thrust steadily as you move your hands away from the spine and across the back then gently glide your hands back across the back toward the spinal column. Repeat this step as you move upward along the individual’s back and then do it again on the other side of the person’s back.

Massage the spinal column. Begin at the base of the back and work up each of the sausage-y muscles on each side of the spinal column with your fingers or your thumbs. Knead each tiny node at least five times to produce some friction before moving on to the next. Massage your way all the way up one side of the spinal column and then repeat the same thing on the other side of the spine.

One of the things to remember as you work through every one of these massage techniques is that it is good to re-relax your person between each portion of the massage you’re giving. This means that after using the heels of your hands for specific applied pressure, you must go back to the rub you used at the beginning for a couple of minutes.
