No More Debt Bondage
Many strategies exist (some good some bad) on how to save money. This is because more often than not building a savings is perceived as an issue of self-control, and while that is true, it is also an issue of self-manipulation. More often than not the more critical component of strategy is first altering ones own perception and focus, and then only subsequently thereafter altering the problematic behavior.
Often growing financial debt builds a sort of internal mental conflict that is literally a type of pain. It really and truly hurts. It causes cognitive dissonance. On the one hand, the best step to take would be to build a habit out of watching your income down to the pennies, but to do this you must first confront where you’re currently at financially. If debt has already accumulated, the sting of reality may be like a punch to the lower back.
It’s critical to your eventual financial success that you realize and accept that this pain, while necessary, is a temporary matter. The sooner you rip that old crusty band aid off and get to work, the sooner you will be back on top of things and feeling on top of the world. Do it today! Remember, financial debt is a form of modern slavery, and by making any real progress whatsoever you are taking the first few steps to becoming a fully free, self-actualized person, which is a type of transcendence in and of itself. The mantra “this too shall pass” (as does all things) may be of aid when biting the bullet and beginning the ditch digging effort that paying off financial debt really is.
Armed with the knowledge that confrontation of your actual situation will be a real form of pain, there is a way to actually help yourself become increasingly resilient to this type of stress, and mental pain. Believe it or not, one of the truly best ways to build psychological resilience is to build physical resilience! Hit that local fitness center. After you are high from that beta-endorphin rush that follows a good cardio workout, and just a little more numb to pain than usual: go home, login to your banking website, fetch your bills, and find out what the REAL numbers are. Do this at least a couple of times per month.
Do yourself a favor and make a permanent habit of looking at those numbers. Confront reality more often and you’ll find yourself naturally compelled to work harder, and make more intelligent long-term decisions as well… and it all starts with that firm slap in the face when you make an effort to actually look at your statement. That pain is what actually triggers in your brain the rush of brain chemicals that provide you with the capacity to alter your completely ingrained behaviors. It is truly necessary! It does hurt, but it will be your salvation ultimately.
