Combining a Roth IRA With a 401k

November 23rd, 2011

There is a reason that employers offer their workers 401ks, they work great and can help you save money for retirement. If you can’t invest into a 401k or want to invest some additional money on top of it you can also invest into something called an IRA. Together they make a great combination that can lead to a great future.

The 401k is a plan that some employers will offer their employees. With the plan an employee can choose to set aside part of their income into the plan. This will be taken out of the employee’s paycheck before it can be taxes.

Once invested into the plan it can be invested into different securities where it can appreciate. The great thing about this plan is that you do not have to pay any taxes on the interest that you make off of the investments.

You do have to pay taxes once you take the money out, so it is not completely tax free. But because you got so many tax breaks early on you still come out way ahead due to compound interest. 401Ks really are helpful to the large majority of Americans. If you want to learn some more 401k info on your specific plan you can contact your company’s human resources department.

Roth IRAs can be used in combination with 401ks and together they can make a great team. With Roth IRAs the individual has to create the plan themselves. There are several articles on the internet on how to start a Roth IRA.

Once it is created it is very similar to 401ks. Money can be invested and can grow tax deferred. But there is one big difference with a Roth IRA.

The bad news with Roth IRAs is that you cannot write off the money that you invest into them on your taxes. The good news is that when you take the money out it will be tax free as long as you follow the IRA withdrawal rules. This includes all of the interest that you made on the money, so it is a way to get a tax free income once you retire.

By combining both plans investors can get the best for both worlds. It can give them a massive tax break on their investments, which can help them grow their money and thanks to Roth IRAs you can also get some free cash flow after you retire.
