One of the biggest commodities today is web hosting. Two main elements of any web hosting plan are disk space and bandwidth. Disk space is essentially the amount of space that you have been given on a server to store your personal web site. Bandwidth is the amount you have available to move the web pages from the server over to the browser so visitors can view your site. The pages of your website, along with any graphics that you use, are what consume bandwidth.

It’s important to keep in mind that while the network lines that are used to carry data around the web have a limited capacity, there is no limit to the amount of data that can be transferred at any time. Many of the hosting companies that are around today claim to offer unlimited bandwidth hosting, but you need to be aware that there are limitations to both disk space and bandwidth. Before you decide to purchase an unlimited plan for your website, you should know what you’re preparing to buy.

Offering an unlimited plan is something that many web hosting companies offer as a bonus feature. If it’s unlimited then you as the consumer will never need to worry about running out of space, right? The truth is, it is impossible for any hosting company to offer unlimited bandwidth hosting or disc space. So why, then, do unlimited hosting plans exist? The answer is really quite simple, many websites actually only consume a small amount of bandwidth. The hosting companies that offer these unlimited plans are basing their sales pitch on the basis that your website won’t use very much.

If you own a small website and know that it will not be consuming much bandwidth, then unlimited bandwidth hosting makes the most sense. Some unlimited plans will come with restrictions like no audio or video downloads. These will use up more bandwidth and cost the hosting company more money. If you are considering an unlimited plan, understand what your overall needs will be. If they are not going to be intensive then you will not have any problems with an unlimited plan. If, however, you intend to have a lot of visitors to your site and want to have video downloads then do not choose an unlimited plan in the hopes that your bandwidth will be unrestricted. You may end up being charged extra or the web host could even shut your website down.

The best course of action before deciding on unlimited bandwidth hosting is to plan ahead. Take the time to figure out exactly how much bandwidth and disk space you will actually need to run your site. Look for plans that meet those requirements you have. Only consider unlimited hosting if you’re absolutely sure your disc space and bandwidth needs are going to be low. If you are planning to run an e-commerce site or a site you expect to grow in the future, then you should avoid any plans that offer unlimited hosting.

Anyone who has put up a website knows that you need to consider the web hosting bandwidth when figuring out which host to use, and which plan to purchase. In some cases you don’t need a lot of bandwidth, but in others it is important to get plenty because of the size or type of website that you have. If you don’t have enough bandwidth you will have problems keeping your website up and running should your business suddenly take off and need more than you anticipated.

Of course if you are just putting up a small website for friends and family that just updates them on what is going on in your life and doesn’t have anything much that they would be downloading, you probably don’t need to get unlimited web hosting bandwidth. You can get one of the less expensive plans that doesn’t give you as much storage and bandwidth. There is no need to pay extra to get more than you really will use.

Those who have small businesses will need to have a bit more web hosting bandwidth. Their websites will be larger, and more likely to have more complicated features that take up extra space. However, they might not really need unlimited bandwidth either. Some businesses mainly just have information about the company on their website, which doesn’t necessarily need a lot of bandwidth. Even those that sell products over the internet can get by with a medium amount of bandwidth rather than an unlimited plan in many cases.

Those who will be better off with unlimited web hosting bandwidth include large companies, especially those that have databases built in to their websites. Other people who have very large websites could also use unlimited bandwidth, especially those that have gaming websites or those where people download things like videos or music, as this can take up a lot of bandwidth.

It is helpful if you can estimate the amount of bandwidth that you will actually need before you put up your website so you won’t have to worry about changing plans all the time. If you are not sure you can start with a plan offering limited bandwidth through a host that offers many different bandwidth options, and just upgrade to a plan that gives you more bandwidth as you find the need for it.

When it comes to unlimited hosting, you want to make sure that you go with a reliable hosting provider. Look into the reviews of the various options so that you can find out which ones tend to have better customer service and fewer technical problems. You don’t want to spend a lot of money for unlimited hosting and then have your site continually crashing. Some hosting providers oversell their services and then when things get really busy have problems with service. Keep this in mind and don’t just automatically choose the plan that is the cheapest. Quality should matter as much as price when making these sorts of decisions, especially if you want to make money from your website.

Decide how much Web Hosting Bandwidth you need.

There is a lot of talk regarding bandwidth, most likely, you’ve heard this term at your web hosting company. Although there are many ways to describe bandwidth, it can be seen as the size of data that goes between two separate ends of an internet network link (i.e. from your web host to your computer). Bandwidth is one of the most important topics for a web host to discuss and its size is measured per second, in bits. How much bandwidth is used by a site varies depending on the services it offers. A site like a forum where there is a lot of scope for people to chat and interact will require more bandwidth than non-interactive sites. The more options a person has to interact on a site, the higher the bandwidth usage is likely to be. All of these options mean there is a larger amount of data being used and more people visit the site more often when compared to a standard website.

Knowing how to calculate bandwidth is important and easy. Take the size of your website to be 10 KB and that twenty people visit your site each day. This would mean your bandwidth usage could be calculated 10 x 20 bites for a day. Multiplying this figure by the amount of days in a month would give you your monthly bandwidth usage. It can be handy to know the other measurements as sometimes bandwidth is listed in bytes.

8 bits = 1 byte and 1024 bytes = 1 Kilobytes

It is easy to use bandwidth unnecessarily and the biggest culprits are large sized graphics and a lot of customer comments. It is also fair to say that if the end user seeks to receive a lot of images or large amounts of data that they too will use a fair share of bandwidth. This has to be borne in mind when you are constructing your website. It is common to want to add a lot of cool audio and visual treats to your site but doing so will greatly increase your bandwidth consumption. Knowing how much bandwidth you expect to use will help you seek the right package for your usage but beware of web host providers not living up to their promise. There are some providers who will not deliver what they guarantee and this makes choosing the correct supplier an important task.

Understand the amount of bandwidth that fits your requirements.

How would you known that what is the required bandwidth of your website? This question needs to be answered from technical and mathematical point of view. This would also determine the website content you are having and have projected to include in future. It is always better to keep some bandwidth in hand as it would allow you to develop the website and include new features later on. You should take out some time in determining the bandwidth required for your website. If required you can discuss the issue with your web hosts who can suggest you better on this. Almost every hosting company measures the bandwidth plan on a monthly basis and hence you can chart your requirements based n that only. Bandwidth is generally measured as:

Average Page Views x Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Size Fudge Factor x 30

To ensure the best use of your site, many website owners decide to offer a larger amount of bandwidth and an equation for this would be:

[(Daily Visitors x Page Views x Page Size) + (Daily File Downloads x File Size)] x 31 x Fudge Factor

Note: All these are measured based on average data.

Relation between bandwidth and traffic:

Bandwidth and traffic are closely interlinked with each other. Visitors can experience best the bandwidth as they are the people who carry out various activities with the websites. If a visitor wants to download an MP3 files from a website into the computer, then 4MB traffic is created between the website and the user’s computer. If the user is having a fast internet connection then the file won’t take much time to get downloaded and hence the bandwidth consumed in the process would be low. The reverse happens if the internet connectivity is poor. Traffic is measured by the number of bits that are transferred on network connections.

Handy ways to reduce your bandwidth size.

We all dread bills and an unexpected bill can really cause panic and problems to a person. If you exceed your bandwidth amount, your provider is well within their rights to charge you for this as well as send you a reminder to keep your usage down. This may obviously cause you problems and you could be wondering how you can fix this problem.

Yours website has several files, each of these files have respective sizes of their own. Each of these files, when used by the visitors, consumes some of the website bandwidth. You have control on the bandwidth usage of your website and can increase or decrease these according to the requirements. Another easy way to cut down bandwidth expenses is to prevent the use of too many files, graphics, images and downloadable file son your website. These files themselves are heavy and when downloaded by multiple users, can consume lots of bandwidth thus increasing cost. Suppose there is a large image in the webpage that is downloaded each time a visitor views the website. Then also the same thing happens and unnecessary bandwidth expenditure takes place. If removing the web page images is not possible, then try to decrease its size and you can seen the dramatic change in the bill, next time, when the web hosting company hand it over to you. Cascading Style Sheets also help you to save bandwidth as they reduce HTML file sizes considerably.

Ways to improve your bandwidth use:

Always keep an estimation of the number of visiting or can visit your page in future. A monthly estimation is always beneficial.

It may be possible to purchase a meter free bandwidth facility. This facility may feature a higher than usual cost compared to a limited bandwidth provision but clearly there is no risk of going beyond a pre-set limit. The bandwidth rating is contained on your control panel but it will not be continually assessed by your web host.

If you make changes in your website then always calculate the current web page size or else you will not be able to keep track of the bandwidth bills.

If you can, keep the number of visitors comments to a minimum. You may wish to allow only pre-approved or carefully selected comments onto your site.

Talk to your web hosting company regularly for upgrading your website. Upgrading doesn’t always mean that there will be an increase in the bandwidth consumption. But this can also decrease the consumption of bandwidth by elimination unnecessary files.

If you use JavaScript then instead of embedding it in each page, use it externally.

If you resize any of your graphics or logo, remember to refresh and upload to ensure your bandwidth usage is kept to a minimum.

Last points you should remember:

It is your web host that can guide you bets on bandwidth. Selection of the right web host can matter if your want a proper guidance on web hosting services. The structure and the content of the WebPages would definitely determine the bandwidth expenses. But the effective guidance from the web hosts can equally help you on this regard. Bandwidth theft is a common practice in which the people use other sites images by simply linking them with another page. Such practices, without notice, can be punishable and should not be practices. So if you are a novice, and your website owner advises you on this then always try to avoid. Before discussing with the web host regarding bandwidth and always better to make a study and some research on bandwidth. Your website developers can also guide you extensively in informing about the techniques to save bandwidth.

The whole world of website hosting can be confusing. There are lots of plans, lots of features with confusing terms. Which website hosting plan is best for your website and should you be concerned about plans that don't offer unlimited bandwidth?

by Willow S. Sparks

The whole world of web hosting can be confusing. There are lots of plans, lots of features with confusing terms. Which web hosting plan is best for your website?

Probably the most confusing term in website hosting is “bandwidth” because it really can mean a variety of things. First, it can mean the size of the Internet connection that is connected to your web host/server. Second, if could also mean how much data transfer is allowed by your host. Third, it could be about how much room a rock band uses when they are performing on stage. Alright, I’m just kidding about the last one but some of those amps can really take up space!

When you are talking about website hosting, bandwidth will primarily relate to data transfer. The physical Internet connection to the server is also important. Let me talk about that for a second. You can think of an Internet connection like a water pipe in your house. You would want a large pipe connected to your server to that it can handle traffic easily and not get backed up or overloaded. Make sure your website hosting can handle those traffic spikes when you get them.

Your data transfer (bandwidth) is how much data goes through the pipe. It’s kind of like a water meter on your house that the water company comes out to check. How much data goes through depends on the traffic your site gets and what kind of data you are sending through. If your web site is just text and jpeg images, then that’s not very big data chunks. If you have audio and video files or large PDF files on your website, then those are larger files and when a website visitor requests them, that’s more data being transferred from the web server to their computer.

The two kinds of bandwidth that you can get with a website hosting plan are allowed bandwidth and unlimited bandwidth. The plans that give you a set, allowed bandwidth limit will charge you if you go over that amount. Unlimited bandwidth plans do not charge you for an overage because there isn’t one.

Website hosts that have plans where youre only allowed a certain amount of bandwidth are typically web hosts that offer more in terms of management and uptime. Theyre usually a lot more reliable. They should give you some sort of control panel where you can monitor how much bandwidth your websites are using. Some will even let you pay in advance bandwidth at a cheaper price than if you end up going over / have an overage on bandwidth.

Website hosting companies with unlimited bandwidth plans are often cheaper plans but their reliability is typically lower. These kinds of hosts will sometimes just fill up servers with sites and want volume to make their profit. This type of web hosting is just fine for a lot of sites that are not mission critical. The costs for unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domains, unlimited space web hosting is often pretty low ” under $10 per month.

When choosing a website hosting plan, the bottom line is that you will get what you pay for. If your website is mission critical to your business, then you definitely do not want the cheapest website hosting package out there. You’d be shooting yourself in the foot – and take it from me, that really hurts. A website that is down all the time does not get traffic or generate sales. More expensive hosting plans may or may not offer unlimited bandwidth but that is fine. Just make sure you find out what the costs are for overages and watch how much bandwidth you are using.

So although unlimited bandwidth hosting can be a good thing, it will depend on the host and their availability/uptime. By offering free bandwidth to customers, they’re inviting people to host larger files, like video or audio files on those servers and those other sites would be your neighbors. Since you’re in the same network neighborhood as them, it will matter to you what they’re doing.

Hopefully with the knowledge in this article, you can now better find the right web hosting package that offers the right kind of bandwidth and also the right kind of rock band on stage!
